Opposition chiefs vow to field one candidate at Karua family burial

Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang'i, Edwin Sifuna, Justin Muturi, Ndindi Nyoro, Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua declared that they would unite and field one presidential candidate to face President Ruto. They accused him of abetting corruption and running down the economy, and promised to make him a one-term president. Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Siaya Governor James Orengo were also present. Uhuru to Mt Kenya: Electing Ruto in 2022 was a mistake, repeating it in 2027 would be worse +2

Kenyatta told the leaders to take the Kirinyaga Woman Representative's call for unity and a single presidential candidate seriously.

Matiang'i urged opposition leaders to be honest with one another as they seek a joint candidate, warning against appearing united in public while pursuing different positions elsewhere. Sifuna raised the one-ticket question, while Orengo focused on Mt Kenya numbers.

The opposition has already committed to this. At an earlier sitting on August 24, the united opposition leaders signed a vow to rally behind one candidate despite all of them having presidential ambitions. A technical committee has prepared a manual on how they will choose a flagbearer, but the timing of unveiling the candidate remains unresolved.
